DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – After a frustrating weekend against Savannah State University, the North Carolina Central University baseball team hosts in-state foe Davidson College at the Durham Athletic Park for the final home game of the 2011 season, with first pitch set at 6:00 p.m.
The Eagles and the Wildcats tangled at Wilson Field back on March 27 where NCCU led 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Davidson scored three runs ruining a tremendous pitching effort by senior righty Douglas Dalley (Durham, N.C.) who left the game with the lead intact. Dalley gave up just one run and struck out two despite walking five Wildcat batters.
Davidson leads the all-time series 6-0, but enters play this week with a 16-22 mark overall just 3-10 away from home. At this point in the season, DC is on the outside looking in at the Southern Conference Tournament race just two games behind The Citadel for the eighth and final spot. The Wildcats are in the bottom of the league in hitting with a .246 batting average as a team, but second in the conference with a 3.99 ERA. First baseman Drew Gadaire is seventh in the SoCon batting .366 on the season, while his teammate Forrest Brandt isn’t too far behind at No. 14 hitting .340 at-the-plate. Gadaire is tied for tops on the team with three home runs and leads the squad with 29 RBIs on the year. DC will send right handed pitcher Danny Mooney (1-2, 8.64 to the mound on Tuesday as the freshman will make his third start this season.
Senior lefty Brandon Oatis (Matthews, N.C.) will toe the rubber for the final time at home for NCCU. Oatis enters Tuesday’s affair with a 6.23 ERA while compiling a 1-2 record on the season and currently boasts 104 career strikeouts. Freshman shortstop Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) needs three more hits to tie Akeem Hood’s modern day single season record of 55 hits that was set last season by the junior outfielder who currently leads the team batting .358 in 29 games played.
Tune in beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday evening as the play-by-play voice of the NCCU Sports Network, Chris Hooks, will call the live action off NCCU baseball starting with the 15-minute “Eagle Gameday” presented by the Hilton RTP.
