Video Interview with Glenn Frye after his 13 K's
DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University sophomore right handed pitcher Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) set a modern day baseball record with 13 strikeouts putting the finishing touches on a “Senior Day” doubleheader sweep over Coppin State University (4-1, 5-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park.
The Diamond Eagles were able to complete the series win without scoring an earned run in either game as both teams combined for 16 errors with the Coppin State responsible for 11 of those miscues on the day.
NCCU jumped out in front following the “Senior Day” ceremony with one run in the bottom of the first that began with the seventh double of the season by freshman Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) who later scored on an error by CSU catcher Alex Black that brought Drayton in to put NCCU up 1-0.
In the second inning, after two straight walks to freshman Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) and Blake Murray (Wendell, N.C.) the real trouble began for Coppin State as junior Farquharson (Inagua, Bahamas) made his way to third basend scored both Marrow and Murray thanks to two more CSU errors on the same play and put the host Eagles up 3-0. The fourth and final run of the day for NCCU scored off the bat of Drayton who singled to drive in RBI No. 15 of the season putting NCCU ahead for good.
Coppin State certainly put themselves in position to battle back leaving 11 runners stranded in the contest including a number of bases loaded opportunities but timely defense that included a huge double play by the NCCU defense allowed CSU to score just one run in the seventh inning falling in game one 4-1.
The Diamond Eagles left eight runners on themselves including a number of bases loaed situations in the victory as senior Drew Robinson (Carthage, N.C.) pitched a solid ballgame earning his second win of the season with seven innings of work and just five hits allowed with one strikeout. Senior Brandon Oatis (Matthews, N.C.) earned his first save of the year after holding the visiting Eagles to just two hits in two innings of work.
The final contest of the weekend saw a complete masterpiece from Frye and the Eagle offense supplied the early run support for the second straight game.
In the bottom of the first, the Eagles made their move once again taking advantage of more CSU miscues after Drayton led off the frame with a single and Marrow was hit by a pitch, catcher Jordan McNair for Coppin State threw Simpson’s weak roller into the far corner of right field bringing in two runs and finding the freshman second baseman at third base. Sophomore Nate Smith drove in RBI No. 18 on the year with a sacrifice fly as Simpson plated the third and final run of the first inning.
After a leadoff walk by CSU’s Craig Richmond in the top of the first, Frye went on to mow down the next five batters through the second inning. With five strikeouts in two innings, Frye struck out one batter in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to complete his magnificent performance on the hill.
Not only was he stellar but the defense behind Frye made clutch defensive stops whenever Coppin State threatened as the visiting Eagles left eight runners stranded in the seven inning affair.
Not to be overshadowed CSU’s Jim Vagnier struck out nine batters of his own scattering five NCCU hits in game two as well forcing the maroon and gray to strand eight runners in the hard fought win.
With the score 3-0 in the fifth, the Diamond Eagles plated the final runs of the day after three more miscues by CSU that scored senior Edward Pegues (Laurinburg, N.C.) who reached on an error by Coppin State’s third baseman, and sophomore Derrell Parker (North Miami Beach, Fla.) who reached base on a catcher’s interference. Drayton recorded RBI No. 16 of the season with a single putting NCCU up 5-0.
The righty scattered five hits through the complete game shutout and allowed only three walks and recorded his first collegiate shutout, the first NCCU shutout since March 23, 2008 in a 4-0 over former CIAA-rival St. Augustine’s College, and the Eagles held their first Division I opponent scoreless. The victory over Coppin State marked the fifth shutout in the modern era of NCCU baseball.
Offensively, Drayton led the Diamond Eagles (6-32) going 4-for-8 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and 2 runs scored.
NCCU has a few days off before their next contest as the Eagles will hit the road to take on in-state foe Charlotte on Wednesday, April 20 at the Robert and Mariam Hayes Baseball Stadium at 6:00 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
