DOVER, DEL. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – Looking to salvage a game in the weekend set, the Eagles of North Carolina Central issued the host Hornets of Delaware State University seven walks, committed three errors, and managed just seven hits in a 12-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field in chilly Dover, Del.

The trouble for the Diamond Eagles began in the second inning when the Hornets scored the first six runs of the game off of just two hits that included a triple by DSU’s Cameron Cecil. Russell went on to walk five batters in the frame, while the second hit of the frame was a two RBI single by Keith Hernandez as the Hornets took a 6-0 lead after two complete innings.

The Eagles kept DSU off the board for the third and the fourth inning before the Hornets scored a run in both the fifth and the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-0. The lone run in the fifth inning came off Cecil’s bat, as he hit his third home run of the season to center field. The run in the sixth came off back-to-back extra base hits by the Hornets as D.J. Miller led off with a double and Justin Miller followed that up with a triple to drive in Miller.

Delaware State (9-14) scored their final four runs in the eighth inning with the help of three Eagle errors as the Hornets grabbed a 12-0 lead after eight complete innings.

The Eagles (1-22) finally got on the board in the ninth inning with two runs on three hits to put the score at its final resting place at 12-2.

The loss sends the Eagles to their tenth straight, but shining bright in the loss was senior Edward Pegues (Laurinburg, N.C.) who finished the day 3-for-4 to lead the NCCU attack.

NCCU gets back to action this Tuesday, March 29 as the Eagles hit the road to take on in-state foe Davidson College at 3:00 p.m. from Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
