DOVER, DEL. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University Eagles traveled up to Dover, Del. looking to rid themselves of a seven game losing streak, but a combined 14 runners left on base and four defensive errors led to a Delaware State University doubleheader sweep winning game one 7-5 and game two 7-1 at Soldier Field on Saturday.

The offensive trouble began in game one when freshman Dylan Drayton (Raleigh, N.C.) double to left center field to begin the contest and Troy Marrow’s (Lutherville, Md.) infield hit as the Eagles had one out and runners at first and second. After freshman backstop Carter Williamson reached on a fielder’s choice and Marrow was called out for interference, NCCU had runners at the corners and two outs and left both stranded in the top of the first.

NCCU would not get another hit until the fourth inning but by the time the Eagle bats awoke, DSU was on top 3-0. The Hornets added another run in the fifth and blew the game wide open in the seventh with three runs that was aided by two Eagle errors as Delaware State held on to a 7-0 advantage.

The resilient Eagles didn’t give up with an explosion of runs in the eighth inning that began with Ross Plummer’s (Winston-Salem, N.C.) double to right field, a Drayton bunt single, and junior Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.) hit-by-pitch to load the bases for Marrow delivered a two RBI single to finally get NCCU on the scoring ledger at 7-2. Williamson’s double to right center cut the deficit to 7-3, and senior Edward Pegues (Laurinburg, N.C.) singled to drive in the fourth run of the frame as the Eagles cut the deficit to three at 7-4.

To end game one the Eagles left the tying and possibly game-winning run on base after scoring the final run of the game to cut the deficit to 7-5. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, Pegues struck out as the Hornets held off the Eagle comeback to take game one.

Senior right hander Drew Robinson (Carthage, N.C.) had yet another good outing spoiled as he allowed only three earned runs and struck out four batters in the loss.

The Eagles finished game one with 12 hits and were led by Marrow who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Delaware State’s Ryan Haas went 3-for-4 at-the-dish with three RBIs as well.

Game two saw NCCU take an early 1-0 lead on Williamson’s RBI groundout to give him 13 RBIs on the season.

It was the only run the Eagles managed to score in the final game of the day that was slated for seven innings, as sophomore Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) cruised through the first three innings keeping the host Hornets off the board. Frye finished the game with five strikeouts, but it would not be enough for the Eagles as DSU scored all seven of their runs in the final three innings with two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to run away with the 7-1 win and the doubleheader sweep.

Delaware State (8-14) got on the board in the fourth with back-to-back doubles to take their first lead of the second contest. The fifth frame saw the Hornets score on consecutive singles after an Eagle passed ball, and the final three runs of the contest were scored on three more Hornet hits that were aided by the fourth and final NCCU (1-21) error on the chilly afternoon.

DSU’s Scott Davis led the Hornets in game two going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the win. Davis finished the day 4-for-7 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI.

For the Diamond Eagles, Marrow led the offensive attack going 4-for-8 on the day with a run scored and three RBIs.

NCCU will look to salvage a game in the weekend set on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 p.m. from Soldier Field. Freshman righty Jacob Russell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) will take the mound in search of his first win.
