NCCU looks to end seven-game losing skid

DURHAM, N.C.-  (NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University baseball program heads up to Dover, Del. to take on future conference foe Delaware State University for a three-game weekend set beginning this Saturday, March 26 with doubleheader action starting at 1:00 p.m. from Soldier Field. The Eagles enter the weekend looking to rid themselves of a seven game losing streak.

Game two of the series is set to take place at 4:00 p.m. and the series finale is slated for a 12:00 first pitch on Sunday, March 27.

Since NCCU (1-19) brought baseball back, the Eagles and the Hornets have met just three times in five years with DSU holding a 3-0 advantage. The last meeting took place on Feb. 20, 2010 at the Durham Athletic park during last season’s Eagle Baseball Classic where the Hornets took advantage of four Eagle errors and scored all 26 runs in a three-inning span to take the 26-2 win.

The previous two meetings took place during the first season of modern day NCCU baseball where DSU swept NCCU on March 7-8, 2007 (22-3, 16-6) at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Last time out for NCCU saw the Eagles give the visiting Forty-Niners of Charlotte a run for their money in a pitcher’s duel until the sixth and seventh inning when the Niners scored six unearned runs to pull away and eventually win 13-1 on Wednesday, March 23.

In that contest freshman backstop Carter Williamson (Roanoke, Va.) led the Eagles with two of NCCU’s five total hits on the day. Williamson is second on the squad with a .366 batting average.

Junior Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.) continues to lead the Eagles after 20 games with a .384 batting average and is tied for first on the team with 28 hits while a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases.

NCCU head coach Dr. Henry White will send senior Drew Robinson (Carthage, N.C.) on the hill for game one on Saturday. The 6-foot-6 right hander at 0-5 on the year is still looking for his first win despite being one of the most effective pitchers on the staff. Delaware State will send out right handed hurler Jordan Elliot (2-3, 4.96 ERA) who leads the team with 23 strikeouts.

Game two will see sophomore Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.) is coming off another stellar performance on the hill for the maroon and gray as the righty mowed down a season-high seven batters in game three against Buffalo last Sunday. DSU will see Matt McLain (1-3, 5.04 ERA) on the hill as the righty looks for his second win on the season. McLain is second on the team with 21 strikeouts on the year.

In the final game of the weekend, NCCU will send freshman Jacob Russell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) to the mound for his sixth start of the season, while the Hornets will throw lefty Ryan Haas (0-0, 2.45 ERA). Both will be looking for win No. 1 of the season.

After 20 games, DSU is led by junior Scott Davis who is hitting .365 with six doubles, one home run, and 14 RBIs, while four other Hornets have at least two home runs, and as a team DSU has hit 30 doubles on the season.
