CONWAY, S.C.(NCCUEaglePride.com) - With the score tied at 12 with 13:01 in the first half, North Carolina Central University allowed host Coastal Carolina University to outscore the visiting Eagles 31-15 the rest of the first frame, while dominating in the paint with a 54-14 advantage, which was all the Chanticleers needed to cruise to the 94-59 win on Thursday night at Kimbel Arena
Despite the loss, the Eagles finished the contest with four players in double figures led by freshman Jeremy Ingram’s (Charlotte, N.C.) 14 points. C.J. Wilkerson (Oxford, N.C.) finished with 13 points, while Nick Chasten (Raleigh, N.C.) had 12 pts and Landon Clement (Raleigh, N.C.) ended a frustrating night with 10 points.
The one highlight of the night came in the first half with 14:27 remaining as Clement hit his first of two three pointers in the game that earned him the school record for three pointers made in a season, as he broke head coach LeVelle Moton’s record of 87 in the 1994-95 campaign. Clement currently has 89 trifectas on the year.
CCU (25-3) was coming off its first defeat since Nov. 18, lost its starting point guard to a torn ACL, and announced minutes prior to tipoff that their leading scorer, Desmond Holloway, was suspended indefinitely. That did nothing to deter the Chanticleers to perhaps their best performance of the season, shooting 56.7% while limiting the Eagles to 36.2% on the night. CCU outrebounded NCCU 43-23 and ended up with 16 second chance points in the win.
After taking a 43-27 advantage into the locker room, Coastal Carolina kept its foot on the gas in the second half with an 11-2 run forcing head coach LeVelle Moton to call a timeout to try to slow the Chanticleer momentum to no avail as the margin spread to 54-29. It was all CCU from there as they outscored the Eagles 51-32 in the second half to take the 94-59 victory.
Coastal Carolina was led by All-Big South performer Chad Gray who finished with 25 points while reserve Dexter Moore scored a season-high 22 points in the win. In fact, Moore had only previously scored in double figures three previous times on the season.
The Eagles (12-12) get right back to it, with a two-game homestand beginning this Saturday afternoon at 4:00 against Norfolk State. NCCU dropped a 74-71 decision to the Spartans nearly a month ago.
