NCCU At Wake Forest Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – The host Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University used a 14-4 second half run and missed just five three-pointers to get just enough cushion to earn the 93-79 win over the Eagles of North Carolina Central University on Sunday evening at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Wake Forest bolted out front of the Eagles in the first seven minutes of the contest stretching an 8-5 Demon Deacon lead to a 17-7 10-point cushion following a Travis McKie layup with 13:08 remaining.

The Eagles swung back with of run of its own going on a 15-to-4 run over the next six minutes to grab its first lead of the night at 22-21 following a Nick Chasten (Raleigh, N.C.) putback with 7:08 left in the frame.

The first half featured four ties and three lead changes, but the Demon Deacs came out scorching hot from three-point territory shooting 4-of-6, but in spite of WFU’s offensive efficiency, NCCU took a four-point lead at 35-31 following a pair of Karamo Jawara (Bergen, Norway) free throws.

The Deacs scored the final four points of the half off of NCCU turnovers to send both teams into the locker room knotted up at 35.

During the first 20 minutes of play, NCCU held a 10-0 advantage in second chance points, along with the Eagles out-rebounding the Demon Deacs 19-to-11.

For the second straight game, LeVelle Moton’s squad came out flat in the second half and it proved costly this time around as Wake Forest outscored NCCU 14-4 in the first 3:43 of the second frame forcing Moton to call a timeout.

Despite the deficit, the visiting Eagles still hung around even cutting the double-digit margin on three different occasions to single digits, but the perimeter shooting of WFU proved to be too much to overcome as the Deacs ran away with the 93-79 win.

The Eagles sported four student-athletes in double figures led by junior transfer Ray Willis (Atlanta, Ga.) who scored 23 points, dished out four assists, blocked four shots, grabbed three rebounds, and one steal.  Willis also went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line in the contest.  Landon Clement (Raleigh, N.C.) ended the night with 16 points including a four three-pointers which gives him 119 during his career placing him all by himself in seventh place on the all-time list.  After spending most of the first half saddled with foul trouble Dominique Sutton (Durham, N.C.) stepped it up in the second half with 12 points to finish with 14 including 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.  Since his 1-for-11 performance from the charity stripe at Charlotte, Sutton is 19-of-21 from the line.

As a team the Eagles maintained the rebound lead finishing the game with a 34-28 edge on the boards, and shot 25-of-28 (89.3 percent) from the free-throw line.

Wake Forest (3-0) had two student-athletes score over 20 points as Travis McKie led all scorers with a career-high 25, while Winston-Salem native C.J. Harris scored 22 in the win.

NCCU (1-3) will return to the friendly confines for the next four contests as the Eagles will battle Morris College in the first of the season-long homestand on Wednesday night, Nov. 23 at 8:00 p.m. from McDougald-McLendon Gym.
