www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team hosts fellow new Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Savannah State on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6:00 p.m. in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Friday’s contest also welcomes the return of former assistant coach Shannon Kyner (formerly Shannon Gamble).  Kyner was the assistant coach to current athletics director, Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree from 1999-2005.  During her tenure she assisted the Eagles win three Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships in 1999, 2004 and 2005.

The Eagles (1-20) return to action following a three-set (25-18, 25-14, 25-11) loss to the Rattlers of Florida A&M on Monday, Oct. 10 in Tallahassee, Fla.  Freshman Dayanna Arrufat and senior Tasha-Gaye Richards topped the squad with seven kills apiece.

This season, the Eagles are led by freshman Dayanna Arrufat, sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao and senior Tasha-Gaye Richards. 

Arrufat paces NCCU in kills with 171 kills on the season for an average of 2.51 kills per set, while leading in digs with 126.  Kalao leads the maroon and gray in assists with 308, while Richards guides the blocking campaign with 36 total blocks this year.  Kalao and Richards share the serving game with 14 service aces each on the season.

Collectively, the mighty maroon have amassed 633 kills, 578 assists, 83 service aces, 670 digs and 91 total blocks.

The Lady Tigers (1-17) enter the nest after hosting Mercer on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in Savannah, Ga.

The Lady Tigers’ offense is led by Bryana Gadis with 51 kills on the season, while Ashlee Butler has delivered 187 assists.  Bridgette Stephens and Bianca Helton guide the defensive effort with Stephens collecting 100 digs and Helton amassing 28 blocks.

As a unit, Savannah State has collected 244 kills, 225 assists, 21 service aces, 386 digs and 46 total blocks.

Following Friday’s contest, NCCU will host the defending MEAC Champions South Carolina State on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 p.m.
