PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – While the North Carolina Central University Eagles conclude the Hawk Invitational hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore winless on Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, senior Emanuelle Santos returns to the nest boasting two double-double performance during the two-day event.
NCCU leaves Princess Anne, Md., following four three-set losses beginning with Hampton (25-18, 25-23, 25-22) and California State Bakersfield (25-20, 26-24, 25-18) on Friday, Sept. 30 and concluding with Maryland Eastern Shore (25-16, 25-16, 25-18) and Alabama State (25-9, 25-20, 25-19) on Saturday, Oct. 1.
In their opening match with Hampton, freshman Dayanna Arrufat and Santos led the offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman Alice Genna guided the offense with 16 assists, while sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao added 11 assists in the match.
With her first double-double of season, Santos added 10 digs to her double-figure kills. Defensively, senior Tasha-Gaye Richards paced the Eagles with two block assists.
Collectively, the maroon and gray amassed 41 kills on 114 attempts, 42 digs and two team blocks.
Hampton’s offense was paced by Mianna Armstrong and Sonja Maksimovic with 10 kills apiece. Juliana Chavez and
Lihi Elkayam shared the setting task with 16 and 14 assists, respectively. On the defensive end, Armstrong, Krista
Kraskura and Brittany Hill collected 10 digs each, while Mariah Baylor assisted on four blocks.
The Pirates concluded the win with 38 kills on 110 attempts, five service aces, 45 digs and five team blocks.
The mighty maroon continued Friday competition with a matchup against Cal. State Bakersfield.
Santos continued to be a strong force for the Eagles with her second double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Arrufat followed Santos’ efforts with nine kills. Genna paced the setting campaign with 15 assists, while senior Raven King led in digs with 15. Freshman Ashley McCarthy and Santos shared the blocking effort with two block assists and one solo block apiece.
NCCU concluded the second match on Friday with 34 kills, two service aces, 49 digs and five team blocks.
Haleigh Haratyk and Saelina Dunn guided the Cal. State Bakersfield offense. Haratyk amassed 15 kills, while Dunn finished with 11 kills. Danielle Gong circulated 34 assists, while Lauren Holderman collected 17 digs, along with Haratyk gathering 11 digs.
Cal. Stated Bakersfield concluded the win with 42 kills, six service aces, 47 digs and five team blocks.
The Eagles continued the Hawk Invitational with Saturday contests against Maryland Eastern Shore and Alabama State.
In their matchup against UMES, Santos and Arrufat combined 12 kills collectively, with Santos seizing seven kills and Arrufat collecting five kills. Kalao returned to leading the offense amassing 14 assists, while King gathered seven digs. Santos seized the only block of the match.
The Eagles finished the match with 21 kills, three service aces, 22 digs and one team block.
Saitaua Iosia topped UMES with 10 kills, while Jessica Vicic paced the offense with 35 assists. Iosia and Vaitai paced the serving game with five service aces, as Vaitai collected five digs. Ndidi Ibe guided the blocking campaign with three block assists and one solo block.
The host squad completed the win with 38 kills, 12 service aces, 25 digs and seven team blocks.
In the final match of the weekend, NCCU took on Alabama State.
Arrufat topped the Eagles with six kills, while Santos finished the with five kills. Genna distributed 10 assists, while Santos collected 11 digs. Senior Martisann Sinclair and Arrufat gather one block assist apiece.
The mighty maroon collected 22 kills, three service aces, 30 digs and one team block.
Alabama State’ offense was led by Maya Bell with 13 kills, while Ana Pego distributed 32 assists. Luiza Griz collected five service aces and 11 digs. Erika Thompson gathered two block assists.
ASU amassed 40 kills, two service aces, 46 digs and three team blocks.
NCCU drops to 1-17 on the season.
The Eagles return to the hardwood for a three-match road trip battling UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Oct. 4, followed by a trip to the Sunshine State to face Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, Oct. 9 and Florida A&M on Monday, Oct. 10.
