FARMVILLE, Va. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team dropped both matches during the second day of the 2010 Independent Tournament to end its season with a 6-18 overall record.
In the first contest on Friday, the Eagles suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 setback to Seattle University. With Seattle taking the doubles point, NCCU needed to capture four singles victories to win the match. Jack Waissen defeated his opponent in straight sets at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, Trey Chatman rallied for the win at No. 3 singles. Jose Fabara captured a grueling first set tiebreaker by a score of 13-11, and went on to win at the No. 4 spot in straight sets.
With NCCU losing at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions, the match came down to No. 2 singles to decide the winner. NCCU's Alejandro Espitia lost the first set 7-5, but answered with a 6-3 second-set victory to force a third set. With all eyes now watching one of the best matches of the tournament, Seattle's Alex Montgomery edged Espitia in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
After a long break, NCCU took the court under the lights against tournament host Longwood University in the Eagles' final match of the season.
Waissen and Chatman won an 8-6 battle at No. 1 doubles, but the Lancers earned the doubles point.
Longwood then earned the necessary three singles victories to claim a 4-0 match win.
For his efforts, Fabara was named to the 2010 Independent All-Tournament Team.
NCCU finished the 2010 Independent Tournament with a 1-3 record.
