The Game:
North Carolina Central University enters its first contest as provisional members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) off the heels of a 62-56 hard-earned victory over Washington Adventist University. NCCU enters the contest at 3-3 on the season as does the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University. For the first first time since the 2004-05 season NCCU has started 3-0 at home. Eagles’ head coach LeVelle Moton earned his 10th win at NCCU with the win on Wednesday night.
The Series:
NCCU and South Carolina State have met 37 previous times dating back to Jan. 16, 1941. The last meeting came nearly 15 years ago on Nov. 25, 1995, in which the Bulldogs won 84-79 in Coach Moton’s senior season. SCSU holds a slight 19-18 advantage over NCCU in the all-time series.
South Carolina State University Bulldogs:
South Carolina State University enters the 38th meeting with 3 -3 record on the season with wins against Anderson (94-83), Carver Bible College (69-67), and NCCU’s opponent last Saturday, Allen University (68-56). South Carolina State is led by head coach Tim Carter who is in his fourth season at the helm and has amassed a 51-51 record during his tenure, and is 241-203 in 15 seasons as a head coach. Coming into the weekend the Bulldogs are fourth in the MEAC averaging 70.2 points per game as a team. SCSU is the top free throw shooting team in the conference at 71.1 percent. The Bulldogs are have two players in the top 20 in scoring throughout the league with Darnell Porter 17th averaging 10.7 points a game, while his teammate Brandon Riley is tied for 20th dropping in 10.0 points a game. The Bulldogs were picked second in the league after finishing the 2009-10 season 18-14 (10-6) in conference play. As the three seed in the MEAC Tournament, SCSU beat sixth-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore (59-53) and second-seeded Delaware State (70-68) to advance to the championship game before falling to top-seeded Morgan State (68-61).
