Eagles Postgame Report
DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com)- The North Carolina Central University Eagles won its third straight home contest thanks in part to junior Nick Chasten’s (Raleigh, N.C.) fourth career double-double that included a career-high 15 rebounds in leading the squad to the 62-56 victory over Washington Adventist University in a hard fought contest on Wednesday night at McDougald-McLendon Gym.
From the onset, the winless Shock proved to be a tough out for the Eagles with eight lead changes in the first 20 minutes of play as NCCU took a three-point advantage into the locker room at 29-26.
However, the Eagles led by as much as 11 points in the second half thanks to a 9-2 run, led by Chasten’s six consecutive points, but WAU did not go away easy chipping away at the deficit until a Jamie Newton three pointer made it a three-point affair at 49-46 with 5:52 to go, prompting head coach LeVelle Moton to call a 30-second timeout. Following a C.J. Wilkerson (Oxford, N.C.) turnover, a Kwame Johnson layup made it a one-point game at 49-48 just 22 seconds later.
Despite all the struggles from the free-throw line (9-22, 40.9%), the three-point line (5-21, 23.8%), both season lows, the Eagles came up big when they needed it the most. Immediately following Johnson’s layup junior transfer Landon Clement (Raleigh, N.C.) hit his third and final three-pointer of the night to stretch the lead back to four at 52-48 with 5:01 to go.
The Shock still scraped and clawed back trailing 57-54 with 50 seconds left after two Khalid Martin free throws, but Wilkerson’s only three of the game from the right corner in front of NCCU’s bench sealed the deal for the Eagles giving them a six-point cushion with 18 seconds remaining.
Along with Chasten’s double-double, Wilkerson finished with 14 points despite a 3-for-9 effort from the free-throw line, Clement ended the night with 13 points even though he was a disappointing 3-for-11 from the outside.
For the 0-7 Shock, point guard Jamie Newton opened up the eyes of all 1,891 in attendance as the senior went 10-for-14 from the field including 4-for-6 from three-point range finishing with a game-high 25 points as the only player for WAU to register double figures.
With the win, NCCU begins the home slate 3-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 season, and evens its record on the year at 3-3.
NCCU hits the road for the next four games beginning this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 from the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center against conference foe, South Carolina State University. This marks the Eagles first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest as provisional members of the league. It’s been 15 years since the two have battled with the last meeting taking place on Nov. 25, 1995. The two programs have met 37 pervious times with NCCU trailing in the series 18-19.
