Emmen, Bell Post Double-Doubles In Five-Set Loss

DURHAM, N.C. – Talia Emmen and Shalyn Bell both recorded double-doubles for North Carolina Central in a 3-2 volleyball loss (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 7-15) to Radford at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Tuesday.

Emmen led NCCU with season highs of 21 kills,15 digs and four service aces while Bell added season highs of 18 kills and 12 digs. The duo combined for 26 kills and 15 digs through three sets as the Eagles took a 2-1 lead.

But Radford (3-8) reeled off victories in the final two sets to win the match. The Eagles (2-7) never recovered after falling behind 13-6 in the fifth set.

Morgan Wingo added a season-high 11 kills, marking the first time this season that three Eagles have totaled double-digit kills in a match. Breylan Fairley and Lusiana Damuni contributed 35 assists and 25 assists, respectively, with Damuni reaching a season high.

Damuni, Hailey Gibbons and Alex Fuller each collected two service aces for the Eagles, who totaled 10 aces as a team. Gibbons chipped in 11 digs and Aniah Bass led NCCU with two solo blocks.

The Eagles held an edge in kills 67-62, assists 66-52 and digs 75-73 and finished with a .263 hitting percentage. The Highlanders countered with a .329 hitting percentage, 14 aces and eight blocks.

After playing five matches in eight days, the Eagles will take a short break before competing in the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C., on Saturday, Sept. 19. NCCU takes on UNC Wilmington at noon and Winthrop at 6 p.m.
