McGonigle’s Homer Not Enough As Eagles Fall Twice To UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Hannah McGonigle hit her first collegiate home run but North Carolina Central dropped both games to Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC softball doubleheader at Hawk Stadium on Saturday. The scores were 9-5 in the opener and 8-3 in the second game.

McGonigle smacked a solo shot to left field in the second game which highlighted the Eagles' day. Tyler Suttles and Kendal Daniels each added a triple in the twinbill with Suttles extending her league-leading total to seven this season.

Game 1
Suttles and Kristin Corner both hit RBI singles and Izabella Chavez scored on an error to give the Eagles a 3-0 first-inning lead. The Hawks came back with six runs in the second to go ahead 6-3.

The Hawks led 9-3 after the fifth inning before the Eagles chipped away late. McGonigle hit an RBI single in the sixth and Suttles had an RBI triple in the seventh to pull within 9-5.

The Eagles had runners on first and third with two outs in the seventh but the Hawks recorded the final out on a grounder to end the threat.

Suttles batted 3 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs to lead the Eagles. Bailey went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Chavez batted 1 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. McGonigle was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and Kendal Daniels scored a run.

NCCU totaled nine hits and UMES finished with 12.

Game 2
The Eagles (5-12 MEAC, 7-35 overall) led first for the second straight game, this time on Chavez's RBI groundout in the first inning. The lead was short lived as UMES scored the next seven runs for a 7-1 lead through four innings.

McGonigle provided a spark with her homer in the fifth but the Hawks added a run in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-2 lead. Corner singled in Daniels - who led off the seventh with a triple - for the final score.

Daniels was 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and one run scored and Suttles garnered a hit and scored once for the Eagles, who had five hits. The Hawks (4-13 MEAC, 12-30 overall) tallied nine hits.
