DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central takes its first MEAC softball road trip of the season this weekend with a three-game series against Morgan State at Lois T. Murray Field in Baltimore, Md.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, March 22, at 12 p.m. The Eagles enter the weekend as MEAC co-leaders with a 3-0 conference mark and a 4-21 overall record while the Bears are 0-3 in the MEAC and 3-15 overall.
NCCU is riding high after sweeping Coppin State in its MEAC opening series at home last weekend. As a team, the Eagles batted .408 and amassed 31 hits, 20 runs and 18 RBIs in the series.
Mia De La Fuente led the offensive surge, hitting .500 and accumulating a team-high seven RBIs with one run scored for the Eagles, who defeated Coppin State by scores of 2-0, 8-1 and 10-2 (5 innings).
Izabella Chavez batted .571 with one RBI and four runs scored and
Kendal Daniels batted .556 with one RBI and five runs scored.
Madeline Janssen led an Eagles' pitching staff that did not allow an earned run in the series. She surrendered just seven hits in 12 innings with four strikeouts and zero walks in picking up both wins, highlighted by a two-hit, seven-inning shutout with three strikeouts in a 2-0 victory.
Elana Krupey was the winner in the 8-1 seven-inning triumph, hurling a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks.
Morgan State is coming off a non-conference doubleheader road sweep of North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, defeating the Aggies 5-4 and 9-6. Hunter Newman leads the Bears with a .333 batting average including five home runs and 11 RBIs.
