Bharathy, Puig Montiel Lead NCCU Sweep of MEAC Men’s Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – For the third time this season, the North Carolina Central men's tennis team swept the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly honors, as announced Tuesday afternoon. Naresh Bharathy was named MEAC Player of the Week, while Pol Puig Montiel earned Rookie of the Week recognition.

Bharathy picked up his second Player of the Week honor after helping the Eagles to a 1-0 start in conference play. NCCU faced Howard during its Spring Break trip in Orlando, Florida, defeating the Bison 6-1. The senior claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Michael Major Jr.

In doubles, Bharathy went 3-0 on the week alongside Antoni Pankowski, earning wins against Howard, St. Thomas, and Fairfield. The duo is now on a seven-match winning streak and holds an 8-1 record this season.

Puig Montiel collected his first MEAC honor after going 3-0 in singles. The freshman defeated Howard's Alexander Monagan (6-0, 6-1), St. Thomas' Maxime Navrotchi (6-1, 6-2), and Fairfield's Luca Benaibbouche (7-6, 6-3).

In doubles play, Puig Montiel and Leo Fortier Gariepy went 2-1. The pair defeated Howard's Shawn Yon and Nathan Bermeo, 6-4, and St. Thomas' Navrotchi and Pierluigi Cruypemmimck, 7-6, winning the tiebreak 7-2.

The Eagles will host their next two matches, beginning with Guilford on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
