HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – In its opening match at the Spring Tennis Fest, North Carolina Central's women's tennis team answered the call with a 6-1 victory over George Mason at Hilton Head High School on Tuesday.
NCCU (3-6) started the morning by earning the doubles point. Sara Barbaric and Patricia Palencia teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Valeria San Miguel Soria and Mariana Zottoli clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot.
San Miguel Soria earned the second point for the Eagles with a straight-set win in No. 2 singles. Alejandra Hidalgo Vega followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cenan Lui at No. 1 singles.
Barbaric battled through a tough No. 4 match, securing the first set in a tiebreak before winning the second set 6-3. Palencia dropped a competitive contest at the No. 3 position that was decided by a 10-7 match tiebreak.
Zottoli and Valentina de Aquino closed out the day at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Zottoli also played a set tiebreak before sealing a 7-5 win in the second set. De Aquino played two tiebreakers after winning the first set. After dropping the second set, she captured the match with a 12-10 tiebreak.
The Eagles wrap up their time in Hilton Head with a final match against George Washington on Thursday, March 12 at noon.
