KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – North Carolina Central scored early against Appalachian State but fell 9-3 in Saturday's first game in the Tennessee Invitational at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
In its second game, the Eagles' softball team lost 8-0 in five innings to top-ranked Tennessee, the host team.
Appalachian State struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Eagles responded in the second inning with three runs to pull within 4-3.
The Mountaineers walked
Adriana Person in the second inning with the bases loaded which scored
Kendal Daniels for the Eagles' first run. Two batters later,
Tyler Suttles hit a two-run single that scored
Kristin Corner and
Hannah McGonigle.
Appalachian State scored three runs in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth for the final score.
Suttles batted 2 of 4 with two RBIs and one stolen base to pace the Eagles offensively. McGonigle was 1 of 2 with a double and one run scored and
Izabella Chavez hit a single for the Eagles. Corner and
Isabella Slape each recorded one stolen base.
In the second game, Tennessee scored all eight runs in the first two innings. In relief,
Simone Mack of NCCU allowed just one hit and no runs, finishing with two strikeouts and two walks over 2.2 innings.
