NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University defensive lineman
Khareem Thompson and placekicker
Riley Daniels earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly football honors, the conference announced Monday.
Thompson was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, while Daniels received Rookie of the Week honors following NCCU's 34-0 victory over Howard on Saturday at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
Thompson recorded seven tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and half a sack, as the Eagles posted their first shutout of the season. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native also registered a quarterback hurry.
The senior helped anchor an NCCU defense that limited Howard to four first downs and 114 yards of total offense, including just 44 passing yards. The Eagles collected three sacks and two interceptions while holding the Bison to 2-for-13 on third-down attempts.
Daniels accounted for 10 points in the victory, converting both of his field-goal attempts and all four of his extra-point tries. The freshman connected from 21 and 29 yards during the second quarter to give NCCU an early 6-0 advantage.
The performance marked the fourth time this season that Daniels has made multiple field goals in a game. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native improved to 13-for-16 on field-goal attempts this season, including a season-long 47-yard kick against Campbell.
Monday's recognition marks the second MEAC Rookie of the Week honor for Daniels. The Rolesville High School product also received the award on Sept. 7 after making field goals from 29 and 24 yards in NCCU's victory over Elizabeth City State. Daniels was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Midseason Watch List in October.
The victory improved NCCU to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in MEAC play. The Eagles have won two consecutive games and are tied atop the conference standings.
NCCU returns to action Saturday, Nov. 7, when the Eagles travel to Norfolk State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
