NCCU Claims Four MEAC Weekly Football Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University collected four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly football honors following its 31-12 victory over Delaware State, the conference announced Monday.

Freshman running back Gino Addison was selected as both the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Defensive lineman Zarion Walters received Defensive Player of the Week honors, while offensive lineman Victor Goree was named Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Addison delivered a career performance in NCCU's conference opener, carrying the ball 31 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns. The Starke, Florida, native scored on runs of six and 16 yards during the second half as the Eagles scored 31 unanswered points after falling behind 6-0.

The freshman has recorded consecutive 100-yard rushing performances, totaling 383 yards on 53 carries over his past two games. Addison's showing against Delaware State also earned him Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week and BOXTOROW HBCU National Co-Player of the Week honors.

Monday's recognition marks Addison's first MEAC Offensive Player of the Week award and the second time he has been named the conference's Rookie of the Week this season.

Walters helped anchor an NCCU defense that limited Delaware State to 257 yards of total offense and a 1-for-8 performance on third-down attempts. The Richlands, North Carolina, native registered six solo tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack.

The Eagles held the Hornets scoreless during the second and third quarters, recorded three sacks and forced two turnovers.

Goree led an offensive front that helped NCCU accumulate 427 yards of total offense, including 272 rushing yards. The Rock Hill, South Carolina, native earned a 93-percent blocking grade and recorded three pancake blocks.

The Eagles controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes, recorded 28 first downs and converted both of their fourth-down attempts. NCCU also produced scoring drives of 15 and 16 plays that consumed more than 15 combined minutes.

NCCU (3-5, 1-0 MEAC) returns to O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31, to host Howard University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will air live on ESPN+.
