DURHAM, N.C. – Camp Energy, hosted by the North Carolina Central women's basketball program, lived up to its name this past weekend (June 27-28).
For two days, the sounds of sneakers squeaking, basketballs bouncing and coaches barking instructions were heard inside McDougald-McLendon Arena. Sixteen games featuring eight high school teams, including six from the Triangle area, took center stage.
This is NCCU's first women's basketball team camp since second-year Head Coach
Terrence Baxter joined the coaching staff as an assistant in the 2021-22 season. Baxter received positive feedback from the high school coaches.
"It's good for the kids," Baxter said. "It gets them on campus. Everyone on the team might not play at a DI level but they might decide to attend Central just because of the camp."
Hosting a team camp at NCCU has been Baxter's goal since becoming head coach in the 2023-24 season. It was a staple at Catawba where Baxter was head coach before coming to NCCU.
Baxter is already looking ahead to next year and the future.
"We want to get 20-plus teams or maybe 30 teams," Baxter said.
