ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – With rain in the forecast in the Orlando, Fla. area for Monday, NC Central was prepared to battle a day early defeating St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday evening at the Sanlando Park to begin the Eagles' five-match Spring Break trip. STAC only lost one match this season before facing the Maroon & Gray.
NCCU (5-4, 1-0 MEAC) entered singles play down 1-0 to STAC after dropping the doubles point with two losses in No.1 and 2 Doubles. Sophomores Antoni Pankowski and Leo Fortier-Gariepy did win their match in No.3 Doubles, 6-1.
The Eagles would eventually catch up winning four singles matches. Senior Hugo Hidalgo Vega took No. 1 Singles in three sets with victories in the first and second sets, both 6-2 over Seth Newman. In No. 2 Singles, junior Kareem Abdul Hakim defeated Don Vinz Lominoque in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The final two points came from juniors Rodrigo Alves and Naresh Bharathy in No. 3 and 4 Singles, respectively. After a hard-fought 7-5 first set triumph, Alves won the second set as well 6-1 over Lorenzo Meschini. Bharathy needed a 7-4 tiebreaker to determine the winner of his first set, ultimately winning 7-6 in the first and 6-4 in the second versus Erik Victor Tauson.
NC Central turns its attention to Farleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. The two teams will compete at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
