WASHINGTON, D.C. – In Saturday's doubleheader at the MEAC Round-Up, North Carolina Central's women's tennis team collected two victories versus Howard, 4-3 and Coppin State, 7-0 at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's East Capitol Campus. The Eagles are now 3-0 in conference action.
NCCU (8-7) started the morning with a hard-fought match against Howard. The Eagles would play from behind after dropping the doubles point.
Valeria San Miguel Soria struck first in singles for the Maroon & Gray, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Howard's Sifa Butcher in the No.2 position. Mariana Zottoli would follow that up with a 6-4, 6-1 win of her own in No.3 Singles, giving NCCU a 2-1 lead.
Howard tied up the match again with a victory in No. 5 Singles before Alejandra Hidalgo Vega took a three-set triumph over Nadia Pegram in the No.1 slot. HU's Imani Jean made the match 3-3 in No.4 Singles, with the contest coming down to NCCU's Gabriela Mejia Arenas.
For the second straight match, Mejia Arenas clinched in No.6 Singles, coming out on top 6-2, 6-4 for the winning point.
Later in the afternoon, NC Central swept Coppin State, dominating every match. With a 1-0 advantage following doubles, the Eagles kept the momentum in singles competition.
San Miguel Soria (No.2) and Mejia Arenas (No.6) got things rolling with 6-2, 6-0 and a pair of 6-0 sets, respectively. Patricia Palencia also won in 6-3, 6-1 sets in No.4 Singles.
Hidalgo Vega (6-1, 6-1), Zottoli (6-3, 6-3) and Valentina de Aquino Monsanto (6-3, 6-1) finished out their matches on top for the final three points to conclude the day.
NC Central ends the MEAC Round-Up on Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m. versus Morgan State at the WTEF East Capitol Campus.
