ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina Central's women's tennis team opened its spring break business trip in memorable fashion defeating Quinnipiac 4-3 on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus.
The Eagles improve to a 4-4 record and Quinnipiac sits at 2-6 this season.
NCCU swept doubles competition to head into singles with a 1-0 advantage. The Bobcats would strike back, winning the next point in No.3 Singles.
Sophomore Patricia Palencia broke the tie for the Eagles momentarily defeating Vera Sekerina in a pair of 6-3 sets in the No.4 slot. QU's Carolina Schulson would even the match again at 2-2 in No.5 Singles.
After the Bobcats took the third point in the No.2 position, NC Central would have to win the final two singles matches to secure victory. Sophomore Gabriela Mejia Arenas helped the Eagles inch closer, winning No.6 Singles in three sets, which included two tiebreakers.
The final point came down to No.1 Singles as junior Alejandra Hidalgo Vega dropped the first set 4-6 and won a 7-5 tiebreaker to claim the second set. For all of the marbles, Hidalgo Vega and QU's Willow Renton played a first to 10 tiebreaker. With a score of 10-9, Hidalgo Vega needed another point for a two-point cushion to triumph and did, 11-9.
The Eagles stormed the court to celebrate the win.
Next up, NCCU faces Niagara on Wednesday, March 12 at noon at the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
