DAYTON, Ohio – The North Carolina Central men's basketball team was stalled early by the Dayton Flyers, falling 74-55 on Saturday afternoon at UD Arena.
Khouri Carvey was the Eagles' leading scorer, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Gage Lattimore and Kyric Davis also scored in double figures for NCCU.
With the road loss, the Eagles are now 2-5 on the season.
Both teams opened the contest struggling to get on the board, until Carvey made the first field goal of the game at the 17:53 mark. Dayton and NCCU would knot up the score at seven all before UD went on an 11-0 run.
In the first half, the Flyers got into the fastbreak with 11 Eagle turnovers, leading to alley-oop dunks and open threes. Dayton shot 53 percent, compared to 35 percent for NC Central heading into the half.
Through the first 20 minutes, UD was up 44-20. Carvey had more than half of NCCU's points with 11, only missing one field goal (4-of-5).
NC Central outscored Dayton in the second half, 35-30. Lattimore, who didn't score at all in the first half, would start to knock down shots along with Davis.
Carvey fouled out with 4:36 remaining, but the Eagles ended the game on a 10-0 run, holding Dayton scoreless in the final three minutes.
NC Central did a solid job on the boards, as UD led 38-36 in rebounding. But 18 Eagle turnovers leading to 20 Flyer points would stymie a comeback. De'Shayne Montgomery led all scorers, totaling 17 for Dayton.
The Eagles continue on the road, visiting USC Upstate on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
