DURHAM, N.C. – In the battle of the Eagles, North Carolina Central's men's basketball team soared in the Nest, winning 123-67 on Tuesday evening at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
NCCU earned its second win of the season (2-4), led by Gage Lattimore and Jonathan Dunn. Dunn was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field for 20 points, and Lattimore shot 50 percent, going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, finishing with 21.
Twelve of the 14 Eagles that entered the game scored, with six players in double figures.
The Eagles opened the game on a 12-0 run before Toccoa Falls scored its first basket. NCCU forced 16 turnovers in the first half, netting 23 points off them.
Points from the fastbreak and in the paint were also an advantage for NC Central. Through the first 20 minutes, the Maroon and Gray had 30 paint points and 25 on the break.
One Achilles heel in the first half for NCCU were fouls. The Eagles sent Toccoa Falls to the free-throw line 22 times. NCCU led 64-35 at the break.
NC Central kept its foot on the gas with active hands, causing 11 more turnovers. The Eagles finished the game with 58 paint points. NCCU went 43-of-78 from the field (55.1 percent), a season best.
The Eagles crossed the century mark with 9:43 remaining after a couple of made free throws by Kelechi Okworogwo, putting the game far out of reach for the Screaming Eagles.
Camren Daniels scored the first points of his collegiate career, and Gbenga Olubi made his first field goal in an NC Central uniform. Dionte Johnson distributed the ball for 12 assists.
Head coach LeVelle Moton acknowledged where his team is currently and where he wants them to be.
"We're coming along," said Moton. "I don't care what they did at the other bouts; I'm just judging and evaluating them on their consistent pattern of behaviors around us."
The next stop for NCCU is Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Eagles tip off against the Flyers at 2 p.m.
