CARY, N.C. – Both North Carolina Central tennis programs will have doubles teams in the MEAC Individual Championship finals on Saturday after two days of competition at Cary Tennis Park. This is familiar territory for the men's team, and a new achievement for the women's squad.
Tim Kohl and Rodrigo Alves face South Carolina State's Mikalai Bankou and Bastian Zamora for the title after defeating a pair of Howard Bison in the semifinals, which needed a 12-10 tiebreaker win from the Eagles. This is the second time Alves will play in the conference's doubles championship, after winning alongside Hugo Hidalgo Vega last fall.
On the women's side, there will be an all-Eagle final. Sara Barbaric and Valeria San Miguel Soria will meet Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Mariana Zottoli in the championship. Barbaric and San Miguel Soria came out on top in straight sets over Howard in the semifinals, while Hidalgo Vega and Zottoli knocked off a pair of South Carolina State Bulldogs.
Both doubles matches will follow the men's and women's singles championships scheduled for 9 a.m. Not only will the winners be crowned MEAC doubles champions, but they earn a spot at the ITA Conference Masters in San Diego, Calif. on Nov. 6-9.
