Eagles Sweep MEAC Weekly Basketball Honors

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University swept the MEAC weekly women's basketball honors on Monday, Jan. 6.

Kyla Bryant was named player of the week, Morgan Callahan was selected defensive player of the week and Shakiria Foster was chosen rookie of the week. The Eagles are the first team this season to sweep the conference weekly awards. Before Monday, no NCCU player had won a player of the week award this season.

All three players were impressive last week as the Eagles edged Furman 77-76 on Monday and lost to Coppin State 69-66 on Saturday. NCCU nearly beat Coppin State after rallying from a 13-point second half deficit.

Bryant, a Salisbury, N.C., native, nearly averaged a double-double with 19.5 points, 9.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two games. The sophomore guard registered 22 points and nine assists including the game-winning jumper with three seconds left to lift the Eagles past Furman. She tallied 17 points, nine assists and three steals against Coppin State. Bryant swished two consecutive three-pointers and made a layup to give the Eagles a late four-point lead over Coppin State as they rallied from a 51-38 deficit in the third period. She played all 40 minutes in both games.

Callahan, a Beach Park, Ill. native, posted 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks in two games. The graduate forward collected a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds while helping hold Coppin State star player Laila Lawrence to 13 points and five rebounds in the MEAC opener. Lawrence averaged over 18 points and 10 rebounds, both MEAC highs, entering the contest. Callahan scored 13 points during a 28-11 run in the second half to erase a 13-point deficit and give the Eagles a late four-point lead. She leads the MEAC with 17 rebounds and three blocks after the first week of conference play.

Foster, a Barnesville Ga., native, averaged 17 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in two games, including a career-high 24 points on 9 of 13 shooting to pace the Eagles over Furman. The freshman guard was 3 of 6 behind the three-point arc and added two steals in the victory. Against Coppin State, Foster totaled 10 points, six rebounds and three steals in the three-point loss.
