ELON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team opened its fall season at the Jimmy Powell Invitational on Sept. 13-14 hosted by Elon University. The Eagles faced off against Elon, Virginia Tech, Liberty University and East Carolina University in singles and doubles competition.
Weather altered Friday's schedule and location as the tournament was moved indoors to the Simpkins Indoor Courts in Greensboro, N.C. Three rounds of tennis were completed which included two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The remaining rounds were played outdoors on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Some Friday highlights from the Eagles included victories from doubles team Valeria San Miguel Soria and Gabriela Mejia Arenas over Elon and Virginia Tech and Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Mariana Zottoli over Virginia Tech. Hidalgo Vega also recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Mariana Reding of Elon.
Saturday's standout performances included a 6-2 doubles triumph for Hidalgo Vega and Mejia Arenas against Elon, San Miguel Soria's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Michaela Hegarty of Virginia Tech and Hidalgo Vega's 6-1, 6-1 win over Xenia Jeromin of ECU.
NC Central looks to defend its HBCU National Tennis Championship title on Sept. 19-22 in Atlanta, Ga. at the South Fulton Tennis Center.
