DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team triumphed in a 7-0 shutout at home against Shaw University. This was the first win of the spring season for the Eagles.
For the second time this season, the Eagles were able to secure the doubles point. NCCU won all three doubles matches. Sophomore Candice Bernier and freshman Patricia Palencia came out on top 6-2 in doubles. Sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and junior Kennedy Hill were victorious 6-3 in the No.2 Doubles slot. Junior Lafi Joao and senior Isabelle Exsted triumphed 6-4.
Shaw (3-2) would fall in two singles matches after the Eagles already gained a one-point lead. The opponents of Hill and Bernier would retire their matches giving NCCU a 3-0 advantage.
Senior Jade Houston defeated her Bear opponent 6-3, 6-2 and Joao won No.5 Singles 6-1, 6-2.
Hidalgo Vega was pushed in a 7-5 first-set win, followed by a 6-2 victory to claim the point in No.1 Singles.
With the victory already in hand, Palencia did her best to not allow the Bears to leave with a point. Palencia served up a pair of 6-1 sets to blank Shaw 7-0.
NCCU (1-10) is back in action next Thursday, March 14 to play North Carolina A&T State University at home. The recently postponed match will begin at 11 a.m.
