Palencia and Hidalgo Vega Win in NCCU’s Loss to UNC Asheville

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega collected her fourth singles victory of the season in Monday's 5-2 loss to the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Freshman Patricia Palencia came from behind to win the final singles match of the day.

UNC Asheville (8-2) claimed the first point winning doubles to open the match and came into Durham on a six-match winning streak. Senior Jade Houston and junior Lafi Joao fell in No.1 Doubles 6-2, while sophomore Candice Bernier and Palencia dropped No.2 Doubles 6-4. Junior Kennedy Hill and Hidalgo Vega's No.3 Doubles match went unfinished.

Hidalgo Vega helped NCCU earn a point in No.1 Singles. She defeated Linge Steenkamp of UNC Asheville 6-4, 6-1.

Houston slipped 6-4, 6-0 as her match wrapped up first in singles competition. Hill dropped a pair of 6-4 sets in No.4 Singles while sophomore Isabelle Exsted finished 6-1, 6-2 falling to her opponent.

Sophomore Candice Bernier fought for three sets, clawing back after being down 6-4 in the first and then taking the second set with the same score. She was eventually defeated 6-4 in the third set to close out the match.

Palencia fell behind one set but came back to tie the match in a 6-2 second set and then triumphed 10-6 in a tiebreaker, claiming the final point of the match over Avery Sager of UNC Asheville.

NCCU (0-10) will have a quick turnaround hosting Shaw University on Tuesday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
