NCCU Women’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader at MEAC Round-up

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team dropped its earlier match to Howard University 4-3 and won the final match 7-0 against Coppin State University on Saturday at the MEAC Round-up.

NCCU (5-11, 2-1 MEAC) started the morning facing Howard as the Eagles dropped the doubles point to the Bison. However, sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and junior Kennedy Hill did win their No.3 Doubles match 6-3.

Howard (6-8, 1-1 MEAC) took the one-point advantage into singles competition clinching three more points from NC Central.

Seniors Jade Houston and Isabelle Exsted earned singles victories to lead the maroon and gray. Houston defeated her opponent 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in No.2 Singles while Exsted won 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in No.5 Singles. The final Eagle point came from sophomore Candice Bernier whose opponent retired.

Coppin State (0-6, 0-2 MEAC) was the second team to compete against NCCU on Saturday. The Eagles triumphed in every match.

The No.1 Doubles duo of Bernier and freshman Patricia Palencia and No.2 Doubles pair Hidalgo Vega and Houston each were victorious 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.

Hidalgo Vega and Exsted held their opponents scoreless in singles competition each having a pair of 6-0 triumphs.

Houston won a pair of 6-1 sets in No.2 Singles while Bernier prevailed 6-0, 6-1. Exsted and Bernier are both 3-0 in singles matches to open conference play.

Due to only having four players available, Coppin State surrendered No.5 and No.6 Singles to Palencia and Hill by walkover.

The MEAC Round-up closes on Sunday with the Eagles taking on Morgan State University at 3 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park.
