CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team was victorious 4-3 against Delaware State University on Friday in the first day of the MEAC Round-Up. With the win, the Eagles earned their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference triumph of the season.
NCCU (4-10, 1-0 MEAC) opened conference play with a one-point advantage after a doubles victory. Sophomore Candice Bernier and freshman Patricia Palencia defeated their Hornet opponents 6-3 in No.2 Doubles. Sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and junior Kennedy Hill were also victorious 6-4 in No.3 Doubles.
Hidalgo Vega and senior Isabelle Exsted were the first two Eagles to complete their singles matches. Hidalgo Vega triumphed 6-1, 6-2 and Exsted came out on top 6-3, 7-5 in No.1 and No.5 Singles, respectively.
After falling earlier, Bernier pushed her adversary to an extra set winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 giving NCCU its final point of the match.
Delaware State (6-3, 0-1 MEAC) fought to earn three points in Singles competition. Palencia, senior Jade Houston and junior Lafi Joao each fell to the Hornets.
NC Central continues play at the MEAC Round-Up on Saturday, March 22 in a doubleheader against Howard University at 8:30 a.m. and Coppin State University at 3 p.m.
