Kyla Bryant both earned 2024 All-MEAC honors for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball. Callahan was also selected to the MEAC All-Defensive Team while Bryant also earned a spot on the MEAC All-Rookie Team as announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference late Tuesday evening.
The league announced its annual women's basketball postseason awards at the Chrysler Hall during the MEAC BBT Awards ahead of the 2024 MEAC Basketball Tournament at the Norfolk Scope Arena that will be contested from Wednesday-Saturday, March 13-16. All awards were voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Callahan was tabbed All-MEAC Second Team and MEAC All-Defensive Team after being one of the top players in the league this past season. She led NCCU and ranked third in the conference in both scoring (13.7 PPG) and rebounding (8.8 RPG). Callahan has played a league-high 34.8 minutes per game while also ranking among the league leaders with a .440 field goal shooting percentage (4th), 1.7 steals per game (7th) and 0.8 blocks per game (7th).
The forward from Beach Park, Illinois, resident has recorded nine double-doubles during the regular season while being NCCU's leading scorer a team-high 11 times and NCCU's leading rebounder a team-best 18 times. Callahan poured in a career-high 21 points to go along with three blocks in a win against Coppin State University; she pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds in an overtime win over Howard University; and she dished out a season-best eight assists in a victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University.
Callahan backed up her 2023-24 Preseason All-MEAC prognostication with her first All-MEAC postseason award while picking up a MEAC Player of the Week (Feb. 7) award and two MEAC Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 29, Jan. 11) awards along the way this season.
Bryant had a fantastic freshman season for the Eagles, ranking second on the team and 7th in the MEAC with 11.7 points per game. She topped NCCU and ranked sixth in the conference with 1.8 steals per game while also slipping in the top-10 of the MEAC with 33.4 minutes played per game (2nd), 2.3 assists per game (9th) and .361 field goal shooting percentage (10th).
The guard from Salisbury, North Carolina, was voted to the All-MEAC Third Team while becoming the third consecutive freshman to garner MEAC All-Rookie Team accolades in interim head coach
Terrence Baxter's three seasons with the program. Bryant was selected MEAC Rookie of the Week (Nov. 22, Dec. 27) twice.
Bryant tallied just the third triple-double in NCCU women's basketball program history with 21 points, 10assists and 10 steals in a record-setting victory over Mid-Atlantic Christian College. She reached double-digit points in 18 games as a rookie, including a season-high 26 points in a road game at Jacksonville University, and led the Eagles in steals a total of 14 times. Other game-high performances for Bryant included eight rebounds against Coppin State and five made 3-pointers against Norfolk State University.
NCCU (15-14 Overall, 9-5 MEAC) enters the MEAC tourney as the third seed and will play sixth-seeded Delaware State University in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m.
