CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Hampton University on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Candice Bernier and junior Kennedy Hill both were victorious in singles and doubles to go undefeated in the match.
NCCU (0-9) played a similar match earlier this season that came down to the final point. On Feb. 1 the Eagles lost a close one to Radford University with the same score.
Hampton (4-1) came to Cary Tennis Park with a three-match winning streak on the line.
With the Pirates gaining the early step in a No.3 Doubles victory, the Eagles would fight back winning the last two doubles matches. The duo of Bernier and freshman Patricia Palencia triumphed 6-4 and sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Hill bested their opponents 6-2.
Heading into singles with a one-point advantage, Bernier was the first to complete her match in a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Hampton would even up the score by winning No.1 and No.4 Singles.
The Pirates broke the tie winning No.5 Singles. Hill would eventually give the Eagles a chance as she was victorious in No.3 Singles with a pair of 6-4 sets.
Freshman Gabriela Mejia Arenas gave it her all as she would push the final match to three sets. Mejia Arenas came from behind 2-6 in the first to win her second set 6-4. Hampton took the final set 6-3 to clinch the winning point.
With more expected showers to come this weekend, the NCCU women's tennis match against North Carolina A&T State University that was scheduled for Saturday has been postponed with a date to be determined soon. The Eagles aren't expected to play again until March.
