NCCU BENCH

The Eagles split a pair of road games last weekend, knocking off Howard University in overtime on Saturday before having its four-game win streak come to an end by league-leading Norfolk State University on Monday. NC Central (12-12 Overall, 6-3 MEAC) is in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings with Howard and Coppin State University.

Junior forward Morgan Callahan and freshman guard Kyla Bryant rank third and fourth in the MEAC in scoring, respectively, with 13.3 and 12.9 points per game. Callahan also ranks third in the MEAC with 9.0 rebounds while both players are in the top-10 of the conference in steals per contest. Senior Kimeira Burks sits ninth in the MEAC in scoring with 11.4 points per game, giving NCCU three players averaging double-digit points per game.

Senior point guard Tippy Robertson is handing out a team-high 4.0 assists per game for the second-highest scoring team in the league at 66.7 points per game. Robertson is second in the conference in assists per game.

NCCU fell to UMES, 78-61, in the first meeting on Jan. 27 in Princess Anne, Maryland. Callahan tallied a double-double, but the Eagles shot 31.3 percent from the field in the loss. Junior Janiah Jones (12 points) and Burks (10 points) also scored in double figures in that contest.

The Eagles topped Delaware State, 64-58, on Jan. 29 in Dover, Delaware. Jones made five 3-pointers in that triumph for 19 points. Bryant (10 points, 8 rebounds) and freshman Jada Tiggett (9 points, 8 rebounds) both flirted with double-doubles against the Hornets.

UMES BENCH

The Hawks are coming off a pair of wins against the Baltimore schools, flying by Coppin State on Monday and clipping Morgan State on Wednesday. UMES (12-12 Overall, 5-4 MEAC) sits in fifth position in the conference standings, one game behind the Eagles.

Junior post player Ariana Seawell, a former All-MEAC selection, leads UMES with 11.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Seawell, who has five double-doubles and ranks second in the league with a .526 field goal percentage, had scored in double digits in 15 games.

Graduate student Mya Thomas has a team-best 33 made 3-pointers on the way to ranking second on the team with 9.3 points per game. The point guard also distributes a team-best 2.4 assists per game. Senior guard Zamara Haynes, who has garnered Preseason All-MEAC attention for a second straight season, is averaging 8.7 points per game.  Graduate student Mahogany Lester and sophomore Jala Bannerman have been key supporting players for the Hawks as they each are averaging over eight points per game against conference completion.

UMES holds an 19-5 all-time series lead on NCCU. Lester (20 points), Bannerman (13), Thomas (13) and sophomore Lainey Allen (10) all scored in double-digits in January's win over NCCU. Allen completed a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds.

DSU BENCH

The Hornets have lost their last four games and are coming off a 53-46 setback at Coppin State on Saturday. Delaware State (6-15 Overall, 2-6 MEAC) – tied for sixth in the MEAC standings – will play at South Carolina State University on Saturday before visiting Durham on Monday.

Junior forward Tyshonne Tollie leads DSU with 12.1 points per game, but has not played since scoring 16 points against NCCU on Jan. 29. Senior Ja'Naiah Perkins-Jackson also averages double digits on the season with 11.9 points per game, increasing that average to 14.3 points per game in league play. Graduate student Denijsha Wilson, who is a transfer from USC Upstate, is averaging 9.8 points per game. Sophomore Savannah Brooks, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, is supplying 9.4 points per game.

Freshman McKenzie Stewart and sophomore Naomi Zulueta are both averaging around six rebounds per game to lead the Hornets.

Perkins-Jackson netted 15 points in January's loss to NCCU while Wilson logged 10 points. Zulueta had a team-high 10 rebounds while Tollie just missed a double-double with nine boards.
