Kendall Smith were named MEAC Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after their strong contributions to NCCU's winning performance at the HBCU Collegiate Softball Invitational as announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Thursday, Feb. 22.
Jaylah Barr was named MEAC Player of the Week after batting .556 (10-for-18) in NCCU's five games last week. The middle infielder hit safely in all five contests and supplied two home runs, nine RBI and three runs.
In NCCU's two wins on Saturday against Jackson State University and Prairie View A&M University, Barr hit a home run in each contest and finished the day batting .714 with two home runs and eight RBI.
Davis tossed her first collegiate no hitter on the way to being selected MEAC Pitcher of the Week. Davis hurled her no hitter in Saturday's 9-0 triumph over PVAMU. After allowing two walks in the first inning, Davis retired the final 13 batters she faced.
The two-time MEAC All-Tournament selection finished with a 1.17 ERA on the week, recording a season-high nine strikeouts in another complete-game performance against Alcorn State University.
Smith secured her second straight MEAC Rookie of the Week honors after hitting safely in all five games at the HBCU Invite (and has a seven-game hit streak). The outfielder finished with a .412 batting average on the week with five RBI, five runs and one stolen base.
In NCCU's 4-3 triumph over Alabama State University, Smith hit a go-ahead grand slam. Her bases clearing long ball was her first collegiate home run.
NC Central will next play five games at the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina University on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 23-25.
