BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team traveled to Campbell University and stumbled 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and freshman Gabriela Mejia Arenas earned both points in singles for the Eagles.
NCCU (0-6) dropped the first point in doubles competition. Junior Kennedy Hill and senior Jade Houston paired in No.1 doubles and Hidalgo Vega and junior Lafi Joao competed in No.3 doubles. Both teams dropped their sets 6-2 and 6-3, respectively. Freshman Patricia Palencia and sophomore Candice Bernier's match went unfinished.
With the one-point lead heading into singles, Campbell (4-2) was able to garner four more points on the day. Hidalgo Vega and Mejia Arenas would deny the Camels a sweep.
Mejia Arenas earned her first collegiate victory. She defeated Campbell's Veronika Prospalova after falling behind in the first set. After taking a 6-2 triumph in the second set, she would get to 10 points first to collect the win.
Hidalgo Vega played a tight first set before clinching 7-5 and dominated her second set 6-1 for the second point for the Eagles.
Houston was halted in a pair of 6-4 sets and Palencia came up short 6-3, 6-4 against her opponent. Bernier was defeated 6-0, 6-1 and Hill fell in a pair of 6-2 sets.
Next weekend the Eagles are on the road for two matches starting at Wofford College on Friday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
