DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team narrowly fell against Radford University 4-3 on Thursday in the Eagles home opener.
NCCU (0-4) began the afternoon in a tight doubles affair. Sophomore Candice Bernier and freshman Patricia Palencia defeated their opponents 6-4 in No.2 Doubles.
With both the Highlanders and the Eagles earning a pair of victories, the doubles point came down to junior Kennedy Hill and senior Jade Houston. The duo was pushed to a tiebreaker set eventually suffering a 7-6 defeat giving Radford its first point of the match.
Radford (1-2) started off singles competition with the one-point advantage before sophomore Alejandra Hidalgo Vega won in two straight sets of 6-1 to tie the match.
Bernier and Palencia also triumphed in singles. Bernier came out on top 6-3, 6-4 and Palencia outscored her opponent 6-1, 6-3 giving NC Central its third point of the match.
Hill and Houston fought back after falling behind by one set, but both dropped their third set to the Highlanders. All tied up, Radford secured the final point in a 6-2, 6-0 match over junior Lafi Joao.
NC Central hosts East Carolina University on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
