ELON, N.C. – NCCU women's tennis sent three players to third-place rounds in singles flights at the Elon Fall Invitational on Sept. 22-24.
The tournament was hosted by Elon and featured Campbell, East Tennessee State, East Carolina, Emory, James Madison, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, UNCG, and Virginia Tech. Due to continuous rainfall on Sept. 23, there were only two days of competition.
Candice Bernier,
Isabelle Exsted, and
Jade Houston all earned victories for a chance to finish third in their individual brackets. Houston placed third in the Acorn Singles A flight after winning her first match versus Anne Lou Champion of East Carolina 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. She would then get the walkover victory over Reka Matko of James Madison.
Bernier triumphed 6-2, 6-3 in the Powell Singles A flight against Hayley Glen of James Madison. Exsted defeated her first-round opponent, Ella Olexa of UNCG, in the Acorn Singles B flight 6-2, 6-3.
Maria Picazo Martin prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 over Brooke La Frenz of East Carolina in the Oak Singles A Round Robin flight. Berner collected a doubles win with
Patricia Palencia in the Gold Doubles flight after defeating Campbell competitors Lena Karlovcan and Mariana Ossa 6-4.
The Lady Eagles will wrap up their fall season at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Oct. 19-23 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
