CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team competed at the Tom Chewning Fall Invitational on Sept. 22-24, where newcomer
Hugo Hidalgo Vega and sophomore
Kareem Abdul Hakim won multiple matches to lead the Eagles.
The Tom Chewning Fall Invitational took place at the new tennis center, bearing the same name in Chapel Hill, N.C. The rest of the field included Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Furman, Virginia Commonwealth, and the host school North Carolina. Due to heavy rainfall during the tournament, the last two days of matches were played indoors.
Hidalgo Vega garnered two singles triumphs, including a three-set thriller scoring 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 to defeat Michael Heller of Duke. Hidalgo Vega's second singles victory came against Thomas Kennedy of Furman, including a second-set shutout.
Abdul Hakim paired with Hidalgo Vega for a 7-6 [7] win versus Cole Burnam and Leonardo Dal Boni of Furman. Abdul Hakim fought for three sets to drop his opponent, Emil Westling of Furman, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 in singles.
Four more Eagles were in the win column this past weekend.
Oliver Saarinen and Leo Fortier-Gariepy were victorious in doubles on the first day of competition. The duo defeated Furman's Burnam and Dal Boni 7-6 [4].
Lucas Artigas and
Naresh Bharathy both won singles matches against fellow NCCU teammates.
The Eagles return to action on Oct. 6-8 for the Spartan Fall Invitational, hosted by UNCG in Greensboro, N.C.
