ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University was beaten 7-0 by South Carolina State University in the Eagles' final regular season contest at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Five of the six singles competitions went to a third winner takes all set.
Reigning MEAC Player of the Week
Isabelle Exsted won the first set against Malannia Vashkevich (6-3) before dropping the final two sets (6-1, 6-2).
NCCU sophomore
Lafi Joao took the first set against Nalanda Teixeria 6-4 but fell 6-1, 6-2 in the final two sets. Joao's classmate
Kennedy Hill won the first set against Rachida Berjane (6-1) before being clipped 6-0, 6-4 in the other two sets.
Junior
Jade Houston was beaten by Teodora Vujicic (3-6, 6-2, 3-6), freshman
Candice Bernier fell to Semlali Hind (3-6, 6-4, 2-6), and current MEAC Rookie of the Week Alejandra Hidaglo Vega was clipped by Soyfa Vitaliyena Chursina (6-2, 6-0).
In doubles action, Hill/Bernier fell to Vitaliyena Chursina/Hind (6-2), Houston/Joao was beaten by Vujicic/Teixeria (6-2), while Hidalgo Vega/Exsted and Vashkevich/Berjane match went unfinished.
NCCU (10-10, 4-2 MEAC) will begin the 2023 MEAC Championships from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, April 29 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
