NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman first baseman Takia Nichols was selected the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, after she batted .500 during a perfect 3-0 week for the North Carolina Central University softball team.
 
Nichols hit safely in all three triumphs and most noteworthy was her two home run performance with four RBI that helped NCCU rally to a 7-6 victory over University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. After hitting a solo home run earlier in the contest, Nichols drilled a go-ahead, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the game-winning runs.
 
The rookie from Hillsborough, North Carolina, now ranks second in the MEAC with five home runs and she is just trailing teammate Ivory Jones, who already has seven homers on the season.
 
Nichols started off her week with two hits in a 3-1 victory over South Carolina State University in extra innings on Monday. Nichols added one more hit and a run scored in NCCU's final game of the week, a 9-1 triumph over UMES in Saturday's nightcap.
 
NCCU is 5-0 in conference play and Nichols is currently riding a four-game hit streak.
 
The Eagles will next host Appalachian State University in a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas Brooks Park on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
