NCCU Women’s Tennis Defeats Howard, Coppin State on Friday

CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team enjoyed an undefeated Friday during the MEAC Tennis Round-Up, as the Eagles knocked off Howard University, 5-2, and swept Coppin State University, 7-0, at Cary Tennis Park.

In the opener, NCCU freshman Alejandra Hidalgo Vega beat the reigning MEAC Player of the Year Jordan Grayson of Howard in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the top spot in the line-up to set the tone for the Eagles. Hidalgo Vega also paired up with sophomore Isabelle Exsted to earn a 6-0 sweep in the No. 3 doubles position.

NCCU captured the doubles point when Jade Houston and Lafi Joao defeated Grayson and Sifa Butcher, 6-3.

Kennedy Hill, Houston and Exsted captured straight-set wins for the remaining three singles points in the 5-2 triumph over the Bison, last year's MEAC championship runner-up.

Later in the day, NCCU cruised to a 7-0 victory over Coppin State. Hidalgo Vega, Hill, Houston and Joao all posted straight set singles wins, while Candice Bernier and Exsted held comfortable leads when their opponents retired.

In doubles action, Hill and Bernier blanked CSU 6-0 at the No. 1 position, while Hidalgo Vega and Maria Picazo Martin won 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.

NCCU (6-8, 2-1 MEAC) wraps up competition at the MEAC Round-Up on Saturday (March 18) at 3 p.m., versus Morgan State University at Cary Tennis Park. Admission is free.
