CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Delaware State University to open conference play on the opening day of the 2023 MEAC Round-Up at Cary Tennis Park on Thursday afternoon.
In singles play, Current MEAC Player of the Week
Lafi Joao fought and defeated Baluck Deang 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Freshman
Candice Bernier picked up her second consecutive victory with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Daria Julia. Sophomore
Isabelle Exsted also claimed her second straight win as she defeated Samara Guillroy 6-1, 6-2.
Additionally in singles competition, reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week
Alejandra Hidalgo Vega had her five-match winning streak snapped by Kit Yi Kay Au-Yeung 6-2, 6-2.
Junior
Jade Houston fell to Klaudija Lisovska 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore
Kennedy Hill was outlasted by Noelani Lui 1-6, 7-6, 3-6.
In doubles action, Hill/Bernier moved to 4-4 on the season after beating Julia/Lisovska 6-4. Hidalgo Vega/Exsted was defeated 6-3 by Lui/Deang, while Joao/Houston fell to Au-Yeung and Eva Golembiovska 6-4.
NCCU (4-8, 0-1 MEAC) will return to action on day two of the 2023 MEAC Round-Up with matches against Howard at 9 a.m. and Coppin State at 3 p.m.
