Kareem Abdul Hakim was named Mid-Eastern Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week, while graduate student
Sebastian Pino was tabbed MEAC Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Abdul Hakim collected his first doubles victory and the second singles win of his collegiate career in the Eagles' 4-3 victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon.
After the teams split the first two doubles competitions Abdul Hakim and fellow freshman
Facundo Olmedo outlasted Christopher Johns and Tymofiy Khrystyuk 7-6 to claim the first point for the maroon and gray.
In singles action, the Jakarta, Indonesia native, battled Khrystyuk for three intense sets. Abdul Hakim won the first set 6-4, Khrystyuk claimed the second frame 6-3, and Abdul Hakim won the third winner-takes-all stanza 7-6.
Pino picked up a victory over David Flisberg 6-2, 6-4 to claim his ninth singles win of his career. The Caracas, Venezuela native also competed in doubles alongside sophomore
Oliver Saarinen and fell 6-4 to Flisberg and John Gabelic.
After earning the first victory of the season, NCCU (1-6) remains busy and returns to action with a three-match slate on consecutive days to start the month of March. On Thursday, March 2, and Friday, March 3 they host Hampton and Eastern Kentucky on the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts before heading to Conway, South Carolina to battle Coastal Carolina on March 4.
