Jerni Kiaku earned MEAC Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, for their performances in North Carolina Central University's 73-68 overtime road victory at Norfolk State University, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
Burks scored a career-high 26 points with 21 of those points coming from long range. Her seven made 3-pointers is the most made by any Eagle in more than a decade and is tied for second most in program history. The Chicago native shot 8-of-15 from the field, while adding three rebounds, four steals and two assists. This is the second conference player of the week honor for Burks this season.
Kiaku, who claims her sixth MEAC Rookie of the Week award, continued her strong play for the maroon and gray with 17 points against the Spartans, which was her 14th double-digit performance of her freshman campaign. She shot 8-for-16 from the floor with three assists in the overtime thriller.
NCCU (10-12, 4-3 MEAC) will next host Morgan State University in its Pink Game for breast cancer awareness on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
