Women’s Tennis Inks Mejia Arenas for Spring Semester

DURHAM, N.C. – The head coach of women's tennis at North Carolina Central, Sofia Rachi, has announced Maria Gabriela Mejia Arenas as the new Eagle signee for spring 2024.

Mejia Arenas is from Barranquilla, Colombia, and attended Miami Virtual School. In her young career, she has already represented her home country. Mejia Arenas has competed on Colombia's U16 team and secured a gold medal in the 2019 Colombian National Championships.

As a top-20 ranked player in Colombia, Mejia Arenas has also won multiple G2 and G3 tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals of the J3 tournament in Panama. She already has WTA points to her belt after competing in three WTA tournaments.

"We are so excited to have Gabriela join our Eagle family," said Rachi. "Gaby has represented Colombia for multiple years and has extensive experience competing at the highest level. We are lucky to have her and excited to see what she will do in her future here as an Eagle."

Currently, Mejia Arenas is playing in Juegos Nacionales (National Games) and is set to join women's tennis in 2024 for the start of the spring season.
