DURHAM, N.C. – Graduate students
Jeslyn Spencer and
Isa Dostal supplied a pair of big performances on their Senior Night to lead the North Carolina Central University volleyball team to a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over South Carolina State University on Friday evening inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Spencer ripped a match-high 19 kills while tallying eight digs and two block assists. Dostal followed with 12 kills and three block assists. Spencer's 19 kills were a season-high total while Dostal's dozen kills was her second highest total of the season.
Spencer and Dostal each hit over .340 in their last home match.
NCCU celebrated its senior class of three just before play started with
Lejla Viteskic joining Spencer and Dostal in the senior recognition festivities.
The Eagles had to rally from a first-set deficit to end the regular season in the win column. NCCU will head into postseason play with a 6-17 overall record, including a 5-9 mark against conference competition, after securing the 20-25, 25-14, 25-221, 25-22 triumph on Friday and extend its win streak over South Carolina State to 18 matches.
Sophomore
Emmie Modlin, the two-time reigning MEAC Player of the Week, continued her stellar play with 16 kills, nine digs, three blocks (one solo) and two aces to match Spencer with 20 points. Modlin reached double-digit kills in each of NCCU's last six matches.
The Bulldogs used strong defensive play to keep the match close. Freshman libero Trinity Stevenson supplied a match-high 17 digs and SCSU made 11 team blocks compared to NCCU's five team blocks. Juniors Kiyah Felder and Hailey Harris led the visitors with 13 points apiece. Felder had 10 kills and four blocks (two solo) while Harris tallied 10 kills, one ace and three blocks (one solo).
However, the Eagles blasted 62 kills in the match compared to 44 by the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Kamren Harper chipped in eight kills and junior setter
Bella Dearinger orchestrated the attack with 43 assists. Dearinger also completed a double-double with 11 digs. Junior libero
Loren Johnson tallied a team-best 12 digs.
NC Central will next play in the 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship hosted by Delaware State University from Nov. 17-19. The Eagles will be the sixth seed and they will open up against third-seeded host Hornets in the quarterfinals on that Friday.
