NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University sophomore outside hitter Emmie Modlin was selected MEAC Co-Player of the Week and junior libero Loren Johnson secured her second MEAC Defensive Player of the Week as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced its weekly volleyball awards on Monday, Oct. 30.
Modlin averaged 4.13 kills and 2.50 digs per set for the week in a pair of four-set road matches last week in Baltimore, Maryland, on the way to earning her first ever MEAC Player of the Week honors. Modlin had a team-high 17 kills in a 3-1 win at Morgan State University on Friday and then tallied a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs in Sunday's match at league frontrunner Coppin State University. She also finished the week with a .244 hitting percentage.
Modlin, a resident of Pinehurst, North Carolina, has reached double-digit kills in three consecutive matches for a total of 12 times in NCCU's first 20 matches on the season. She also has four double-doubles on the season.
On the season, Modlin ranks sixth in the MEAC with 2.85 kills per set. She also tops NCCU's starters with a .217 hitting percentage on the season.
Johnson, who was also named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3, averaged 4.75 digs per set in NCCU's two road contests this past week to earn the award for a second time this season. Johnson contributed a match-high 25 digs in Friday's victory over the Morgan State Bears and then chipped in team-best totals of 13 digs and two aces in Sunday's match against the Coppin State Eagles.
Johnson, a Charlotte, North Carolina, product, has reached double-digit digs in 17 of NCCU's 20 matches and has been a strong server for the maroon and gray.
On the season, Johnson ranks third in the MEAC with 3.89 digs per set and seventh in the league with 0.33 aces per set.
NC Central will host a pair of MEAC matches inside the LeRoy T. Walker Complex as part of NCCU's Homecoming this weekend, including University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at 6 p.m., and Delaware State University on Sunday at 6 p.m.
